At HKIS, Play is a natural and authentic way for your child to make sense of and learn about the world around them. It allows her the opportunity to be an inquirer and ask questions. A Day in the Life
At HKIS, every child is loved, and every child has a purpose. An HKIS Lower Primary typical day is filled with inspired learning, time together as a community, and support from caring adults.
Arrival time at HKIS Lower Primary is a special moment each day, as your child gets off the bus and is greeted by an administrator or teacher. The Repulse Bay campus has a mandatory bus policy. Students must register with our bus provider, Kwoon Chung Motors. There are dozens of bus routes all across Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. Each morning begins with a morning meeting to build community in the classroom. Core subjects such as math, literacy, religion, and science are taught by your child's homeroom teacher. Students travel to bespoke learning spaces for specialized subjects, such as Chinese, art, music, library, and PE. Students are given brain breaks throughout the day and time to spend as a community during recess, snack time, lunch, and guided play. See a sample 6-day schedule.
Students eat their lunch in the school cafeteria on the 2/F across from the library and the Wonder Lab. Children may bring their own lunch or order pre-purchased meals from our food provider, Sodexo.
Reception 1 and 2 students finish the day at 1:50 pm and return home on their school bus. We don’t recommend students at this age to have too many scheduled activities after school. The end of the school day is best spent with unstructured play at home, reading with a parent, and allowing their learning for the day to settle in.
Grade 1 and 2 students finish the day at 2:50 pm and are offered a number of activities in our paid after-school activities (ASA) program. A second set of buses is available at 4 pm to take students home after their activity. HKIS offers over 11 types of programs through in-house and third-party providers ranging from sports, performing and visual arts, service & spirituality, S.T.E.M, and more. See our full program.
Student Learning
At HKIS, we provide an engaging and meaningful learning experience for our Lower Primary students. The curriculum is aligned with educational standards, enabling students to acquire, utilize, and apply knowledge and skills across various subject areas. Teaching methods, instructional strategies, and assessment practices are aligned to allow students to effectively demonstrate their learning.
Our Curriculum
Our well-rounded curriculum encompasses key subjects including reading, mathematics, science, and social studies. Additionally, we offer specialized subjects including art, music, physical education, Chinese, and library. We connect classroom learning to real-life contexts that are relevant and captivating, making education more engaging and applicable.
Student Life
Building a school community is key to the HKIS experience. Students come together in community in spaces outside of the classroom. They enjoy group gatherings, such as monthly Chapels to learn about Christianity and other faiths. They engage in collaborative activities on Dragon Days, where students choose from a menu of activities such as printmaking, cricket, and mah jong.
Chapels
The Christian identity of the school is expressed through community-building expressions of faith such as devotions, prayer, and chapel. Chapels, in particular, are an opportunity for the proclamation of God’s love and a communal expression of identity. Chapels are inclusive. All students and staff are invited to participate in a respectful, reverent, and joyful way. In Chapel, every student hears that he or she is a beloved child of God and has been given unique gifts for their calling in life.
After School Activities
HKIS offers a wide variety of after-school activities (ASAs) through in-house and third-party providers. Activities are a large part of developing the whole child and are an important part of the HKIS program. Activities range from sports, performing and visual arts, spirituality, S.T.E.M, and more.
